York-Merriden Shoulder Sealing
Overview
The York–Merredin Shoulder Sealing Project involves the widening and sealing of the existing Quairading York Road pavement between the townsites of York and Quairading.
The works extend from approximately 29km east of York to 45km east of York, delivering around 16km of continuous upgraded roadway.
Detail
The project involves partial reconstruction of the existing roadway, focusing on targeted sections rather than a full-width upgrade. Works will be carried out efficiently while maintaining traffic operations and safety, supported by the road’s relatively straightforward alignment and conditions.
Key scope elements include:
- Boxing out sections of existing traffic lanes and shoulders, offset 2.1 m from the centreline
- Replacing these sections with 200 mm of new basecourse and a two-coat seal
- Retaining the remaining traffic lanes, with only a minor 150 mm overlap on both sides
- No full overlay or resealing required across the entire road
Additional works:
- Removal and replacement of roadside infrastructure, including:
- Guideposts
- Signage
- Linemarking
- Upgrades to meet current standards
The road currently operates at a 110 km/h speed limit, with minimal elevation changes and few high-speed curves. These conditions support efficient construction while maintaining safety for road users.
The project alignment intersects a railway corridor, requiring close coordination with Arc Infrastructure, and includes multiple waterway crossings via bridges and tributaries.
RJV is committed to working collaboratively with Main Roads WA and key stakeholders to deliver the project successfully. This award highlights RJV’s capability in delivering high-quality civil infrastructure across regional Western Australia.
